U2 and ATA100 fun

Looks like I am now the owner of an Adaptec 2940U2 and an IO Magic ATA 100 PCI IDE card. At some point in the future when I migrate to 3 x 200GB drives I’ll move my 4 x 120GB drives into the backup server. Since 7000 series 3Ware cards are so expensive, and 6000 series RAID 5 is so slow, I’ve decided I’ll use Linux software RAID and a few inexpensive ATA PCI cards. Should be cheaper and faster than a 6800 and about one tenth the price of a nice 7500-8.

Meanwhile, the U2 and a Quantum Atlas 9.2GB drive will probably end up in my workstation, replacing the 40GB ATA disk I have now. I’ll probably dual boot Windows 2000 off the 40GB disk after I move the installation from the 30GB drive I currently have configured as a slave in my workstation. (Yeah, I know using master/slave on ATA is bad — I ran out of ports.)

Hopefully, in the morning, I will be surrounded by SCA internal bay goodness, sometime after 5 in the morning…
