With my recent discovery of a patch allowing my inexpensive gigabit network adapters to function, it looks like its time to crack both servers and upgrade them accordingly.
For the file server:
- Linksys EG1032 Gigabit adapter
- SCSI SCA bay with 2 x 10K RPM SCSI
- Perc2 SCSI RAID adapter
For the backup server:
- D-Link DGE-500T Gigabit adapter
- Generic 300W PSU (250W Enlight right now)
- IO Magic PCI ATA controller
- 2 x 256MB PC100 SDR (2 x 32, 1 x 64 presently)
I’m contemplating swapping the Athlon XP 1700+ from the file server with the Duron 1.2GHz in my workstation. A recent BIOS upgrade seems to allow the selection of a 100MHz FSB on the L7S7A2, which previous did not work with my Duron. The 64K L1 cache on this Duron is starting to feel a bit small.
I’m also in the process of installing an Adaptec 2940U2W in my workstation with a 9.2GB Quantum Atlas 10K RPM SCSI disk. The 40GB IDE drive will serve as a partition for /home with half the disk dedicated to a Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional installation for playing Enemy Territory. At some point I might swap in my 3Ware Escalade 6200 and run dual 40GB Western Digital IDE drives in a RAID 1 configuration. Hopefully, Windows can deal with that. I know Linux can.
Finally, I need to buy 4 x 8cm and 1 x9.2cm CoolMaster fans. I need some for my AOpen H700A and the latter for my backup server’s case. You can never keep those 120GB Western Digitals too cool.
