Finished building a new firewall box

I had to sacrifice my nice Matrox G400 as I ran out of spare AGP cards to use. I needed all the available PCI slots. I stuck in a variety of Fast Ethernet cards and an Adaptec 2940U2 with a 4GB Seagate SCSI disk for good measure. The box seems swell. The board had a [...]

Dirvish directory tree migration

I’ve been using Dirvish to handle snapshot backups for more than nine months now. I set things up kind of strange initially, so I finally migrated my directory tree to mirror more what the author of the tool originally intended, I think. If you ever need to mess with the internals of Dirvish, here are [...]

Linxcel 4 por KVM on the way

I just ordered a 4 port Linxcel KVM switch and four cables. Hopefully I’ll have that by next week. I’ve been flipping through too many boxes of late not to have an actual KVM switch. I’ll probably sell my 2 port KVM with built-in cables. Also ordered an Athlon XP 1800+ so I can bump [...]

Backup server migrated

I installed my old Dell P3 mainboard in the backup server. Its a bit more responsive now. I’m copying over all the files on the backup array, so I can move to Linux software RAID. A bunch of dumb ATA PCI controllers and software RAID should be fast enough for the backup server. I don’t [...]

Finished my tcng tutorial

I wrote a tutorial on using tncg finally. But, I’m finding file sharing traffic does not like to be classified by port and tcng is not equipped to deal with that. It also seems to have some issues matching IP packets based on length, which I need to prevent the inclusion of packets with huge [...]

More server migrations

My Dell ATX to ATX converter arrived, so its time to migrate the backup server to a slightly newer mainboard. Hopefully this will resolve my Gigabit issue and I’ll be able to consistently sustain 16MB/s both to and from the backup server. I’m going to take the old board and build a new firewall with [...]

Interesting LUG meeting topic this month

modsecurity for Apache was discussed. I should probably deploy this on TrekWeb as it is sorely needed. My tcng tutorial is nearly finished. I need to add some explanation of how HTB works, again, along with how changing the class priority effects it, and a bit about SFQ as the leaf qdisc.

Cluebies like Solaris?

There’s just not much excuse for this, from SunHELP mailing list: Hi Friends, What is dmesg and how can we use this? Also, need info about cron. Thanks Sigh.
