ip_nat_ftp is your friend

Oops. That’s why active FTP wasn’t working. I knew there was something strange going on. I so rarely need to initiate an FTP session, they weren’t working for six months and I only just now noticed it.

polltc 1.02 released

Thanks to the contributions of several people, a new version of polltc is available with bug fixes. It should work on a wider range of traffic control configurations now. From the README: BACKGROUND polltc_ is a small Perl script I wrote for gathering statistics on the effectiveness of a given traffic control configuration under Linux. [...]

The Mac Mini, how about no?

I was quite excited to initially learn of the new Apple Mac Mini. A relatively inexpensive Mac, with OS X goodness, that I can actually afford. Or so I thought. For $500, sure, why not? However, AnandTech’s recent review indicates that a mere 256MB of RAM is simply inadequate for OS X. So, add another [...]

Phishing for Fun on RentaCoder

Wow, what an amusing waste of time. And yes, I do mean phishing. I signed up for an account and thought I’d browse some of the available programming work. Guess what I found? Yes, someone who, after successfully phishing for logins to professional organizations, wanted someone to harvest the organization directories. Many of these sites [...]

Tivoli 5.3.0 on Debian fun

Sadly, there aren’t any native Debian packages for Tivoli. So, I had to fetch the RPMs and install those. That works, mostly, provided you use alien to transform them into Debian packages. However that’s not enough. You need to extract a post installation script from TIVsm-BA.i386.rpm or the language stuff won’t be properly symlinked. I [...]

Debian Installer Release Candidate 2 Smooth as Silk

For ages I have been using unofficially Woody ‘Net install CDs to get boxen up and running. Since I am burning down my media laptop today, I thought I would try out RC2 of DI. I have been a bit curious for a while, but haven’t had any boxes that really need a reinstall. So [...]

Just file those upstream please

I had always wondered what happened when I filed bug reports… [15:47] [zack] except bugs don’t die on their own, unfortunately :( [15:47] [arioch] sure they do [15:47] [arioch] they get NMU’d [15:48] [arioch] or something surfaces and they’re magically fixed [15:48] [arioch] years down the road [15:48] [zack] well someone still has to close [...]

Burning many things down

I added some gigabit cards to my boxes this past week. Unfortunately, these older boxes rarely even achieve 15MB/s, so it’s hardly worth it. Even more fun, it appears that my cards, which use the tg3 driver, fail when under a load on my Supermicro 370DLE ServerWorks IIILE chipset based board. What’s more, my Broadcom [...]

Laptop hard drive noises

It seems my old Inspiron 3800′s 20GB Hitachi hard disk is making funny noises. I brought it upstairs to investigate, as it sounded like a fan was clogged. I opened it up and found no issues. And the noise went away. So, I stuck the hard disk back in and powered it up, just in [...]

The Sims, eh?

[00:18] [jasonbox] honestly never played any of the Sims games [00:18] [jasonbox] It’s just way too perverse for me [00:18] [arioch] I tried once upon a time [00:18] [arioch] the clown of sadness showed up [00:18] [arioch] and didn’t go away [00:18] [jasonbox] LOL [00:18] [jasonbox] The what? [00:18] [arioch] so my family started peeing [...]
