autofs fun

I finally decided to take a few moments and setup autofs. I thought about using supermount but that appears to have fallen much out of favor. At the moment it’s still maintained by Con Kolivas though. I based on my configuration on a nice, green guide I found. faith:~# cat /etc/auto.master /var/autofs/media /etc/auto.media –timeout=1 . [...]

Avis Rent a Car, such a lame employee

I am driving up to the SANS conference in Blacksburg, VA in March. To my misfortune, Avis is the only company the university is contracted with and the only company I can use unless I want to foot the bill. Although the price differential is negligible, I can only be reimbursed if I rent a [...]

Debian and java-package

Arslinux.com has a nice WiKi entry on installing Java under Debian with something a bit like dh-make-perl or kernel-package, called java-package. You pull down the official Java JRE from Sun and transform it into a nice Debian package. Debian at arslinux.com. There’s a bunch of other Debian related stuff too, like cloning a source machine’s [...]

20GB Toshiba 2.5″ replacement installed

I picked up my 20GB replacement from Fedex today. Toshiba was nice enough to honor their warranty and send me a replacement. I swapped it into my media laptop and booted up Debian Installer. I walked through the installation and recreated my LVM configuration at which point I saved my changes and aborted the installer. [...]

3Ware S.M.A.R.T. temperature monitoring

I thought setting up temperature monitoring ought to be pretty simple. I had always simply used smartctl before and it just worked with the 3Ware option. Well, not so anymore. With the recent changes in SCSI ioctls in 2.6 kernels, a bunch of stuff has broken in strange and magical ways. I ended up getting [...]

Debian women? Three button Macs?

[00:48] [mrmanic] #debian-women: not an oxymoron anymore [00:50] [zack] hahaha [00:50] [zack] chealer: like most *women* channels, most are men ;) [00:51] [chealer] yeah I almost realized that [00:59] [jasonbox] laff [00:59] [jasonbox] hardly [01:00] [jasonbox] finding single chicks in technology is like finding a Mac with a three button mouse [01:00] [chealer] ROFL [01:01] [...]

Where’s my core?

The Debian package of Dirvish presently ships with a master.conf example that includes an exclude for core files. Unfortunately, by dumb coincidence, it also excludes drivers/usb/core/usbcore.ko which is rather critical for many things, including USB itself. Of course I discover this after finishing a three hour recovery using DI to rebuild my LVM’d laptop. Needless [...]

Recovering LVM2 with Debian Installer RC2

Your disk with a LVM2 configuration and Debian GNU/Linux just died. You have a backup on another server and another disk you can recycle to recover. What do you do? If you’re running Debian, you can just use that nifty Debian Installer CD you used for your initial install to recover. It has the LVM [...]

Hotscripts, yawn

It seems hotscripts still lists some stuff I wrote five years ago that they decided to add without my permission. With some mod_rewrite magic I can send that traffic back to hotscripts where it belongs. RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} hotscripts.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://hotscripts.com/pleaseremoveyourlinktomysite/$1 [R] Hotscripts, if you’re listening, go away! (Oops. WP eats my backslashes. Oh [...]

Rampant Lack of Professionalism

The emails and phone calls I have been getting of late from recruiters have been rather frightening. Is some vague command of the English language and proper grammar so much to ask? Do you really expect to be taken seriously when choice instant message abbreviations like ur, half sentences, incorrect capitalization, and Yahoo! Mail signature [...]
