Interesting. I didn't have a use for disconnected operation.

Zimbra Desktop is more like an 0.3 release than a 1.0 release, though. Core features should work as advertised.

As it happens, Thunderbird extensions are merely JavaScript, so I may attempt to create an extension for the functionality missing from ZD; Mostly just server saved tagging.

In the meantime, I am back to using Thunderbird and Kontact and have a greater appreciation for both now than I did when I sought to abandon both.

Plus, I know about VirtualBox now, which was necessary to properly host Zimbra Open Source (tm) Edition.

I have been using Zimbra desktop for a while. I use it instead of the web client because I can have access to my emails when I have no Internet. I found this client much superior to Thunderbird, despite the few quirks you indicated.
I like it because the client is not stopped during the sync of the emails, which many other clients have problem with.
Sharing is new and mildly working, documents is still broken. Calendar alerts are strange. All things that should get better when there is 1.1.
I'm waiting for the killer app here which is to make it a full exchange client, or at least a better integration with exchange.
Nevertheless, overall, I like it, and would recommend it only to people on the move, otherwise as you say, use the web client.
