Discover card attempts to scam me into disability insurance

I received a call today from someone claiming to be calling on behalf of Discover with some entity called Monumental something, wanting to sell me some kind of a disability policy (maybe this?) paid for the first three months by Discover, then by me thereafter and charged to my card.

The first person I spoke to, an unlicensed telemarketer, blasted a bunch of terms and numbers at me about the coverage level, then claimed she had to transfer me to a licensed agent to fulfill her job. I asked her politely what it was her job was and she simply read her script again, then transferred me to a licensed agent.

The licensed agent also reiterated something about the terms and conditions, that it’s paid for three months, and that I could look at it for free — provided I signed up and was willing to cancel the coverage after 90 days if I wasn’t happy with it. It wasn’t immediately clear what exactly the coverage was.

At no point did anyone ever bother to ask if I wanted the coverage. If you want to merely look at the terms of coverage, signing up appears to be compulsory. I can only imagine how difficult it is to cancel the coverage.

As an agent licensed in Florida, I find the tactics employed by Discover unscrupulous and unethical.

Beyond that, my recent experience with Discover has been very poor, from capping their 5% cash back on gas to $100 last summer to restricting cash back bonuses to $50 or greater from the prior $20. I no longer use my Discover card. I am considering simply canceling it, though that’ll likely effect my credit score by reducing my outstanding, available credit.
